The Principal Financial Group is currently seeking an Executive Compensation Consultant-Client Focused in our Minneapolis or Raleigh office.


The Principal Financial Group is looking for an experienced compensation consultant to join the consulting team. Our Executive Compensation practice focuses on private ESOP owned companies. As a result, this position provides an opportunity to grow as a compensation consultant and affords an opportunity to work with and build consulting knowledge about Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs). No ESOP experience is required.


An Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) is a qualified retirement plan that holds company stock. Typically ESOPs are established by privately-held companies. As part of our industry leading ESOP consulting practice, we assist ESOP companies and other privately-held companies with the design of their compensation program, including compensation benchmarking, development of compensation philosophies and the design and implementation of long-term incentive programs.


We are looking for an individual with the following characteristics:

Analytical: Like working with numbers, both performing calculations and analyzing the results. Be able to find solutions to meet the clients needs.


Communicator: Can produce well-written reports that explain complex ideas clearly. Exhibits good demeanor speaking with clients.


Ownership: Own projects and take responsibility for moving them forward and ensuring they are completed correctly.


Positive Attitude: Pleasant to work with and enthusiastic about work.


Responsibilities include but not limited to the following:


· Benchmark companies existing compensation (base, bonus and long-term incentives)


· Prepare written reports for clients summarizing benchmarking results and including additional analyses of existing compensation versus market norms


· Design and communicate long-term incentive programs based on analyses and client goals


· Prepare proposals for compensation consulting engagements


· Grow the practice: assist with sales opportunities and develop own network of referral sources


· Assist ESOP Financial Analysis team with ESOP modeling as needed. This includes both modeling and preparing reports and client interaction.


· Develop and maintain relationships with external clients


· Identify and recommend opportunities for improvements related to processes and services


Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications:


Required skills


· Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience


· 2-4 years of experience as a client-focused compensation analyst or consultant, which would include but is not limited to: benchmarking existing compensation, preparing reports summarizing benchmarking results, experience designing long-term incentive plans, accustomed to interacting with clients


· Proficient Excel skills


· Must have good analytical, problem solving, verbal and written communication skills


· Limited travel


Preferred skills


· 4+ years of experience as a client-focused compensation consultant


· Experience with a nationally recognized compensation consulting firm


· Bachelor's degree in Business related field


· Client focused executive compensation experience managing compensation projects through delivery


· Experience working with privately-held companies on their compensation structures


· Willing to consider at next level with appropriate qualifications and experience.

· This position may be located in Minneapolis, MN or Raleigh, NC.
