`Looking up' can be relative

The headline on today's
executive compensation cover story stirred office debate. As writer
Douglas Hanks points out, 2009 was clearly a better year than 2008 for
most top executives at the largest South Florida public companies from a
compensation standpoint.
What isn't so clear is how this will
all play out. Because these companies are publicly traded, much of the
compensation came in stock options that have yet to mature. If a given
company continues to do well in terms of profits, perception and
shareholder value, those options will increase in value. If the
executives don't do their jobs well -- or the markets just think their
companies are slacking -- the value of those options could tank.
We also debated whether our executive compensation review was a good
idea this year. It's easy for those of us who earn far less than
seven-figure salaries to sneer -- especially in a time of high
unemployment and general job insecurity. And if you're an investor or
employee of one of these companies, you've probably already seen this
data.
In the end, we decided that a survey -- abbreviated from past
years -- was in order. Executive compensation is one of the yardsticks
our economy uses to determine how well we are -- or aren't -- doing.
This snapshot of executive pay at Miami-Dade and Broward public
companies is one more measure that the local economy is looking up -- at
least somewhat.
But ``looking up'' is a relative term, as
local residential real estate executive Ron Shuffield of
Esslinger-Wooten-Maxwell told me the other day. Prices in even the
